How free entry competitions work in the UK

Many UK paid prize competitions must offer a way to enter without buying a ticket. On luckladder, that route is free postal entry. It is not a loophole or a hidden perk. Why paid draws offer free entry

Under the Gambling Act 2005, a competition that charges for entry and picks a winner purely by chance can be treated as a lottery. Lotteries generally need a Gambling Commission licence. To stay on the prize-competition side of the rules, operators typically offer a free entry route, usually by post.

That does not mean every free route is easy. Operators can set specific requirements in their terms. What matters is that a free route exists and is described in writing before you enter.

Common reasons postal entries are rejected

Most rejections come down to the same few issues: details that do not match your account, missing required information, arriving after the deadline, or not following the entry format in the terms. Check clause 4 before you post, and keep a copy of what you sent in case there is a dispute.

Postal entry vs buying tickets

Same draw. A valid postal entry goes into the same draw as a paid ticket for that competition.

Cost. Paid tickets include the ticket price plus the service fee shown at checkout. There is no entry fee for postal entries. You pay for postage only.

Speed. Paid tickets are added to your account as soon as checkout completes. Postal entries depend on delivery and processing time, and must arrive before the draw closes.

Volume. Each postal entry needs its own postcard and stamp. Buying multiple tickets online is faster if you want more than one entry in the same draw.
